Are you bored of sticking to the rules or do you feel constrained by the limits of your colour palette? Do you yearn to create expressive and interesting work that slips beyond representational and into something more intuitive and abstract?
This is a new class beginning on 22nd January in the village of Hook Norton. If all goes well this session will carry on throughout the year through summer and autumn in 2025. Each term will explore something new, and you will receive guided tuition and demonstration on the different facets of contemporary landscape painting.
The first term will focus on the visual elements of landscape painting, including line and line weight, shape, scale, paint texture, transitions and edges. We will explore questions like what kind of mood do I want to create? Where do I want the viewer to look? Do I want to create movement with directional brushwork or do I want my work to feel still and quiet?
We will explore the basic structure of a landscape and create tonal sketches of so that you can begin to work with expressive brush marks across a recognisable scaffold. We will then use these sketches to create increasingly colourful and abbreviated work.
It is my hope that these sessions will not only help you to make paintings that feel more like you but that you will be able interpret and interact with the work of other artists on a deeper level.
Throughout the class you will also receive instruction on keeping a sketchbook of ideas and preliminary studies, a comprehensive introduction on colour theory (let’s call it colour training-that’s much less intimidating) and applying and working with acrylic paint, which is a forgiving and versatile medium.
These sessions are suitable for all levels but ideal for those who have practiced landscape painting and would like to take their work further.
